ALPA has long recognised the importance of promoting fruit and vegetable consumption in our communities. Guided by our Health & Nutrition Policy we have worked for many years to tackle chronic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease and some cancers. ALPA has been independently subsidising (no government funding) fruit and vegetables for over 30 years and will continue to do so in an effort to promote health eating and  work towards preventing chronic diseases. In addition, we now also subsidise all freight on frozen, tinned and dried vegetables in member stores. These subsidies help make prices on healthy food more affordable

Our Choice – Active Healthy Life Promotion

Working with the Djuki Mala dance group, ALPA has developed a range of marketing materials to promote healthy eating and lifestyles. These materials including banners for events, as well as posters and labelling to identify health foods in store. These positive images of role models from Arnhemland will go a long way to promoting healthy eating.

Aurukun Healthy Choice Reward Scheme
Apunipima Cape York Health Council and Island & Cape Retail Enterprises have teamed up to introduce a new Healthy Choice Reward scheme in Aurukun community in Queensland. Launched on the 23rd March 2015, the Healthy Choice Reward scheme is designed to increase consumption of fruit and vegetables in remote communities. Developed around a voucher system, similar to that used by Coles and Woolworths for fuel, anyone in Aurukun who purchases $20 of fruit and vegetables at the Island & Cape store is rewarded with a $10 voucher off their next purchase of fruit and veg.

The scheme was introduced as part of a collaborative research initiative between Apunipima, Island & Cape Retail Enterprises, Menzies School of Health Research and James Cook University.

ALPA partnered with Menzies School of Health Research on the Shop@RIC
study, to test the impact and cost effectiveness of a store-based price reduction intervention in promoting the purchase of fruit, vegetables and low joule soft drinks/water and in reducing the purchase of sweetened soft drinks among residents in remote Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory.

Nutrition Checklist App
We worked to turn ALPA nutrition checklists into an App with pictures so that it was really accesible for staff to ensure we stock the right proportion of healthy food in the store. The aim was to encourage managers to train their staff to do the nutrition checklists on a regular basis. Staff enjoy using the app on the tablet and this has led to a greater awareness amongst our staff of maintaining levels of healthy food in the store.

Take-away healthy food
Recent efforts towards increasing the healthy offerings of takeaway foods in
our takeaway outlets has led to a rise of 5% in the amount of healthy foods sold.

ALPA Foodcard

The ALPA FOODcard was developed  to assist families to provide food throughout the whole pay cycle. It was been designed primarily as a family budgeting tool. Customers may choose to have money paid into the FOODcard on pay days and any other time then spend that money over the remainder of the pay cycle or period on a selected range of food and household essentials.

Cool Ridge water partnership
ALPA, in partnership with Cool Ridge water, have encouraged drinking of water by charging only $1 a bottle, starting in November 2014. Since this time, $1.00 bottles of water have had the fastest increasing sales, compared to soft drinks & juices  showing that this has been a very successful strategy
