Manapan Furniture is an indigenous owned business based in Yurrwi. Our team of cabinet makers are local indigenous people. Our mission is to create sustainable employment and trade qualifications for indigenous people living in remote communities. The result of this is beautiful furniture with a story.
At Manapan Furniture locals can learn the skills needed to produce beautiful furniture under professional guidance. Engaging some of Australia’s leading furniture designers and creatives, including Jon Mikulic, Liz Doube, Chloe Walbran, Alexsandra Pontonio, Ashleigh Parker and Suzie Stanford, the Manapan collection of furniture showcases not only their talents, but as importantly, the talent found in the Yurrwi community.
Australian-made furniture is difficult to define. Is it the timber used or the hand that rubs against the grain? In the case of Manapan Furniture, it’s both of these things and considerably more.
Produced at Yurrwi Island, 500 kilometres east of Darwin in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Manapan Furniture is produced by a small group of Indigenous young men with leading furniture designers based in Melbourne providing the designs. The crafted handmade furniture, using Darwin Stringybark and other Australian timbers, is aimed at the top-end of the market for both the domestic, commercial and institutional interiors.
In Yurrwi, everything needs to be barged in. This includes the materials, together with the tools and machinery, used for manufacture. The furniture is then barged out to Darwin where it’s then transported to the southern states by road. The Manapan Furniture project is under the umbrella of ALPA.
We are producing beautiful furniture with a story. Each piece has been created by leading Australian Designers and built by local people of Yurrwi in Arnhem Land.
We are using local timbers and engaging artists within the local communities. The quality of our furniture is world class and passion is seen in every piece. The creation of employment in Arnhem Land is our focus and the result
is beautiful furniture.
