Speaking fondly about his hometown, Jason says there are 13 clan groups that form the Guugu Yimithirr nation and account for around 1000 people. Hope Vale covers 110 thousand square kilometres of land and is a beautiful community where 'the rainforest meets the sea'. It's approximately a four-hour drive to Cairns or you can drive to nearby Cooktown and catch a 45-minute plane ride to Cairns. Jason is proud of his community and welcomes visitors to participate in local clan group guided tours or to visit the famous Rainbow beach famous for its coloured sands. Historically the people of Hope Vale were forcibly sent to Woorabinda Aboriginal Reserve in 1942, as many Aboriginal people nearby were also sent but the Guugu Yimithirr people returned in 1949 and started to clear the land and create Hope Vale as what you see it as today. Jason says Hope Vale is a progressive community where the council is always looking to partner with other Aboriginal organisations where employment opportunities can be achieved for his people, hence why we caught up with him to hear about his thoughts about Island & Cape running the communities local store. Meeting at the Hope Vale Council's Board room, Jason says the relationship between the Hopevale Shire Council's store being managed by Island & Cape has been successful. " The reason we signed with Island & Cape is that they're an Indigenous organisation and they provide training with our staff in Retail certificates." "They also bring in Nutritionists to make sure the food that they're selling in the takeaway is healthy and help us set up the store so that the healthy food is in the front and the not-so-healthy food is in the front." "I'd like to thank Island & Cape for their services and management to help get the store to where it is today. The Hopvale store currently accounts for 80 per cent of local Aboriginal staff.
