Yurrwi Community

Yurrwi is a small island community with a rich history, and a strong yolngu indigenous culture. The Island is located between the Blyth and Glyde Rivers and is separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. It is about 500km east of Darwin and 250 km west of Nhulunbuy. The highest point on the island is only a few meters above sea level.

ALPA plays a pivotal role in the community, not only running the local store for over forty years, but also running a number of other local businesses. ALPA operates a CDP program on the community providing training and employment pathways for local people. ALPA also operates accommodation and labour hire services through Rulku Lodge, in partnership with local families. ALPA has also established a high quality furniture making business called Manapan Furniture. A number of local construction projects have also been completed by BUKMAK constructions, also owned by ALPA and providing local employment.

Yurrwi Contact History
Yurrwi has a long history of contact and trade with the Maccassans who came each season to collect trepang. Tamarind trees on the beach and surrounding an old Maccassan well are an obvious legacy of this period. Traditionally the name Yurrwi belongs only to a small section of land surrounding this well, now known as Bush Camp.

Yurrwi was chosen as a mission site in 1916 by Rev. James Watson of the Methodist Overseas Mission. Building commenced in 1923. In 1940 the mission undertook a contract to build a landing strip for the RAAF on Yurrwi. As a consequence the mission was bombed by the Japanese on the 9th and 10th of May 1943. One Aborigine was killed, and others were wounded. The raids caused substantial damage. ALPA through our CDP Service and Bukmak Constructions have  created a memorial and display of wreckage of several planes at Yurrwi with the support of the NT and Australian Government. Media Students at Yurrwi CDP services created this video about the project:

Providing employment for local people, the Yurrwi RSAS program has been one of the most successful in the country at increasing school attendance, through working with families within the community.

Yurrwi ALPA Store
The ALPA store is the lifeblood of the community, being the only store on the island, it is a central meeting place fro the community. The existing store was built in 1991, and since then it has more than doubled in size with upgraded takeaway facilities and extended trading hours. Goods for the supermarket arrive via barge which arrives just opposite the store. Many of the yolngu staff at the Yurrwi Store have worked for over 5 years and have built the store into one of the most successful in the ALPA group of stores. 90% of the store staff are indigenous, and the store gives back to the community through an established benevolent program.
