🚚Exciting news! The Gapuwiyak laundry service truck has finally arrived in partnership with Orange Sky! 🚚

In just the first week of Gapuwiyaks Orange Sky remote laundry service, our incredible team provided a space for the community to do 131 loads of washing across 13 shifts. That's over a tonne of laundry already! But it's not just about the numbers but the connections we're making.

Around 40 people came together for a yarn during this time, showcasing the power of social connection. And if we look at the hours of human connection around the van, with our fantastic team of 4-6 new team members, these are new jobs, paying real wages, how incredible is that?

The impact of this initiative is truly heartwarming. We dedicated one shift to an Elder, another to supporting a kinship carer, one focused on NDIS, and one where the Miwatj public health team joined us to help a household with several cases of scabies. We are here to support and uplift the community in any way we can. But the demand is growing!

Clean bedding is vital in promoting good health, especially in remote Indigenous housing in Australia. Regularly washing and changing bed linens helps eliminate dirt, sweat, and dead skin cells that can contribute to various skin conditions. In particular, clean bedding is crucial for preventing the spread of scabies and other skin infections commonly found in these communities. By providing a mobile laundry service, initiatives like the Gapuwiyak Orange Sky partnership ensure that community members have access to clean bedding, improving their overall health, sleep, and well-being.

In the first week alone, we had queries to wash from about 20-25peop
le approaching us at the van that we couldn't accommodate. This shows the immense need for our services and the positive impact we're making. We are proud to partner with Orange Sky Australia, the world's first free mobile laundry service for people experiencing homelessness and social hardship. To date, Orange Sky has provided over 1.9 million kilograms of free laundry, and 20,000 showers, across 36 service locations. We are immensely proud to be a part of this great project that will ultimately create jobs and improve health and hygiene outcomes for our community members.
