Progress update on Ajurumu Store expansion The Ajurumu Store Aboriginal Corporation is well underway with an exciting expansion and redevelopment project. This major upgrade marks a significant investment in long term food security, improved community service, and enhanced retail infrastructure for the Warruwi community. Bukmak Constructions, a subsidiary business of ALPA, is delivering the project and has already made strong progress. Once completed, the store will feature: Expanded retail space to better serve the growing needs of the community Increased warehouse capacity to support food security, particularly during the Wet Season and associated events Additional freezer and chiller capacity to ensure safe and sufficient food storage Secure, covered dry goods storage to improve stock management, resilience and safety This store is setting the benchmark for the future of all ALPA retail stores, with a carefully considered design, layout, and structure. A key focus of the project has been ensuring the store remains fully operational throughout the construction period. This requires a carefully phased approach to maintain continuity of store trade and minimise disruption for customers. Construction has continued steadily, even through the arrival of Cyclone Fina which coincided with the first stage of roof installation. Following the cyclone, the Bukmak team quickly returned to site, making strong progress. Phase 1 of the redevelopment is now approaching lock up stage, marking an important milestone. Local employee Roy Mangirryang has been a consistent and valued member of the project team. Roy has demonstrated strong machinery operation skills and hands on construction experience, contributing meaningfully to the delivery of the works. His involvement reflects the ongoing commitment to supporting local employment and building community capacity. The upcoming phase of works will include: Demolition and reconstruction of the existing cool rooms and office Further expansion of retail and warehouse spaces Disability accessible pathways and entry points to ensure all community members can comfortably access and benefit from the upgraded store The redevelopment represents a strong, community-driven step toward improved food security, initiative infrastructure, and long-term sustainability for Warruwi.
