Strengthening governance: Director training Directors came together from 3 First Nations Boards at ALPA’s Darwin Support Office for two-day governance training, facilitated by the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations (ORIC). After recent changes to the ALPA Board, Directors expressed a strong interest in additional training to strengthen their understanding of governance and better support their evolving responsibilities. Culturally-aligned training Traditionally known for its entry-level programs, ORIC recommended a newly developed intermediate-level training package—designed specifically for First Nations directors and delivered in a way that aligns with First Nations culture, and ways of thinking and doing. ALPA Directors were joined by directors from the Aboriginal Resource and Development Services (ARDS) and the Pirlangimpi Indigenous Corporation for Community Development. The face-to-face training covered governance topics including role and responsibilities, working effectively with CEOs, separation of powers between the Board and management, and decision-making frameworks. Director feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Many highlighted the training’s practical value and relevance, boosting their confidence and strengthening their leadership capabilities. “Strong leadership is the foundation of strong businesses like ALPA, and we’re proud to invest in the development of our directors.”Alastair King, CEO Manage Cookie Preferences
