Last week, ALPA proudly delivered another successful round of the Future Leaders Program, bringing together emerging Yolŋu and Bininj Retail Supervisors from across our communities for one week of intensive learning, leadership development, and engagement with key partners.

The workshop opened with inspiring messages from ALPA’s Executive Team, who shared their vision for a strong and capable First Nations workforce and spoke to the importance of developing leaders who can guide their teams with confidence, pride, and cultural strength. Participants reflected on their challenges and successes as supervisors, built their knowledge of action planning, and contributed their insights on what strong leadership looks like in their stores.

Throughout the program, our Retail Supervisors had the opportunity to meet with several valued external stakeholders who generously hosted site visits and shared practical lessons about operations, supply chains, and customer service excellence. We extend our sincere thanks to Independent Grocers (Metcash), Simon George & Sons, Wyuna Cold Stores, Sea Swift, and G&R Wills for opening their doors and supporting the professional growth of our future leaders. Their willingness to invest time and knowledge helps strengthen the skills and confidence of our remote retail teams.

A key highlight of the program was the development and presentation of a Workforce Development Action Plan, created entirely by the Retail Supervisors. After two days of workshops, breakouts, and group collaboration, the supervisors presented their final Action Plan to the ALPA Senior Leadership Team. Their plan focuses on strengthening workplace culture, improving teamwork, enhancing safety, and empowering Yolŋu and Bininj staff to step confidently into leadership roles. They now look forward to returning to their communities to begin implementing these actions with the support of their Store Managers.

We also express our deep appreciation to The Hon. Selina Uibo, who joined the group to share her leadership journey, her experience navigating competing priorities, and her reflections on staying grounded in culture while working in high-pressure roles. Her warm and generous conversation left a lasting impact on the Retail Supervisors, reminding them of the importance of courage, resilience, and community-centred leadership.

ALPA congratulates all participants for their hard work, dedication, and vision. Their leadership strengthens our organisation, our stores, and most importantly our member communities. This program continues to demonstrate what is possible when we create opportunities for our people to provide feedback in a safe environment.
