NAIDOC: 50 Years of Deadly This year marked a significant milestone as Australia celebrated 50 years of NAIDOC. Our teams and communities embraced the opportunity to come together during NAIDOC Week and celebrate through a diverse range of events that honour culture, history and 50 Years of Deadly. Hope Vale The store team in Hope Vale took part in the NAIDOC march through town, carrying the 50 Years of Deadly banner with pride. They were joined by Good Food People Tilly and Leanne, and visiting nutrition team members Keely and Sarah who had the chance to judge the damper and best dressed competitions - a real highlight of the event! Gapuwiyak For NAIDOC Week celebrations, Gapuwiyak RAES partnered with East Arnhem Regional Council to host a traditional community cooking event in Gapuwiyak over two days. Kangaroo tail, yams, and sweet potatoes were cooked in a traditional ground-fire setting, honouring Aboriginal culture and celebrating the spirit of NAIDOC. The event was open to the whole community and provided an opportunity for people to come together, share food, and celebrate culture. Thank you to all community members and stakeholders who attended and contributed to making the event a successful celebration of culture, community, and connection. Pirlangimpi Over in Pirlangimpi, the nutrition team were kept busy at their Good Food People stall, where the next generation of Good Food People brought their curiosity and plenty of interesting questions. Children were excited to take part in the Eat the Rainbow and Deadly Swaps activities to learn more about good food. Ramingining Back in East Arnhem Land, East Arnhem Land Youth Model (EALYM) was proud to organise the community celebration day in Ramingining with an emphasis on activities for djamarrkuli (children). Led by Local Coordinators Lizzie Durrurrnga, Judy Gapugurawuy and Veronica Gaykamangu along with many Activity Leaders, the event was designed, coordinated and driven by local leadership and decision-making. The event began with the community march featuring banners designed by EALYM activity volunteers and their djamarrkuli, highlighting important messages. Afterwards, the community came together at Bula’Bula park for bungul and manikay (ceremonial dance and song), celebrating and practicing culture with pride. Activities for young people continued across the afternoon with pandanus weaving, running races and a basketball tournament. The day concluded with a medal ceremony where winners from the running races and basketball games received special EALYM NAIDOC medals. Jabiru In West Arnhem Land, the Jabiru RAES team proudly supported the NAIDOC celebrations hosted by West Arnhem Regional Council. The team organised and ran a range of activities, including spear throwing, jewellery making, and bag design workshops, which attracted strong community participation throughout the day.The RAES team also did an incredible job handcrafting the small woomeras used for the spear-throwing activity, each featuring NAIDOC 2026 on the back. It was fantastic to see so many children getting involved, learning new skills, and taking part in the celebrations.
